BETAINE HYDROCHLORIDE + PEPSIN provides a variety of health-supportive factors. Glutamic acid HCl, betaine HCl, and pepsin, a proteolytic enzyme, assist in protein digestion. Gentian root, an herbal bitter, promotes normal secretion of saliva and gastric acid for digestive support. HCl (hydrochloric acid) supports nutrient absorption and helps maintain a healthy gastric pH, which, in turn, supports healthy gastric ecology.

Do not use if there is a prior history, or a current complaint of a peptic or duodenal ulcer, acid reflux, or GERD. Ingested Betaine Hydrochloride becomes hydrochloric acid, the strong acid present in the stomach, essential for the proper digestion of protein and minerals. As it is a strong acid, if you have active inflammation present, such as gastritis, esophagitis, ulcer, acid reflux etc, hydrochloric acid can burn an inflamed mucosa and cause significant pain. After trying betaine hydrochloride, any mild discomfort in your abdomen that wasn’t present prior to the meal is likely a sign that you do have underlying inflammation. So, don’t use this product under those circumstances. If you do use this supplement and experience burning, pain, or even mild discomfort, take 1 tsp of baking powder, mix in a glass of water, and drink slowly.

SUGGESTED USE: When you are beginning to use Betaine Hydrochloride with Pepsin, start with one capsule with a full meal that contains protein, and take it three minutes after the start of this meal. If you do well with this one capsule, in subsequent meals, especially complex and full meals, you can gradually try two, then three, and even four capsules. Large meals that have a lot of protein can use more than one capsule in people with compromised digestion. “Doing well” means no tummy pain or discomfort of any kind. If you do have this discomfort, you still may benefit from Betaine Hydrochloride, but you should consult with your health professional on how to proceed.

If you are benefiting from Betaine Hydrochloride with Pepsin, it is likely that you will benefit from digestive enzymes: either Pancreatic Enzymes (derived from animal source) or Digestive Enzymes, plant based (derived from plant sources). These digestive enzymes should be taken near the end of the meal.
